Short Bio

Dr. Jan Weiss joined Montpellier Business School in 2021 as Associate Professor of Strategy, Management, and Entrepreneurship. He is affiliated with the MBS Entrepreneurship Center and LabEx Entreprendre, the Lab of Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Research & Industry Advice at Université de Montpellier. He holds a PhD in Applied Microeconomics from Jönköping International Business School, Sweden and an MSc in Business Administration from the University of Mannheim, Germany. His previous academic work experience includes Postdoc research at the University of Bergamo’s Centre for Young and Family Enterprises (CYFE) in Bergamo, Italy, a tenured position as Assistant Professor in Industrial Management & Economy at Jönköping University, School of Engineering, and a Visiting Professor stay at the NTU Entrepreneurship Academy, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His primary research interest lies in understanding the joint role of macro and micro-level factors on the entrepreneurial and innovation process and on new venture performance. A secondary research area of Jan is sustainable consumption, which mirrors his endeavor to incorporate sustainable development as cross-cutting research theme. His research has been published in a variety of scientific journals, including International Small Business Journal, Industry & Innovation, Business Strategy and the Environment, Spatial Economic Analysis, Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics, Journal of Consumer Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Communications. In addition, he has served as referee for several journals, including Research Policy, Journal of Business Research, International Small Business Journal, Business Strategy and the Environment, and Journal of Evolutionary Economics. His academic activities have received substantial external funding, among others, from the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education (STINT) and Ragnar Söderberg Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. Jan’s profile is complemented by international work experience beyond the academic realm, including assignments at UN-ESCAP (Bangkok, Thailand), the German-Tunisian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Tunis, Tunisia), the German Embassy (Stockholm, Sweden), Swedfund International (Stockholm, Sweden), DIW Econ (Berlin, Germany), BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany) and SAP (Walldorf, Germany). Jan’s work experience also includes pro bono work, among others, for LekaGape, a non-profit organization in Phalaborwa (Lulekani), South Africa.
