As part of its renewed emphasis on development and internationalisation, Montpellier Business School is to launch 9 new Masters of Science (MSc) programmes in September 2019.
Like the existing 6 MSc, these new programmes will be offered 100% in English and accessible to French and international students who are holders of a Bachelor’s degree (Baccalaureate + 3 years of higher education) or equivalent. The various MSc courses, which last from 10 to 18 months, allow students to specialise in a particular field of study or to obtain a dual qualification.
“Since 2016, the 6 MScs deployed by MBS have seen significant growth and a 40% increase in staff numbers in 2018,” says Dr Denis Lescop, Director of the Bachelor and MSc programmes. “They also enjoy great international recognition: in the QS ranking of the best Master’s degrees in Management and Finance, the MSc in Finance is ranked 9th in France and the MSc in Marketing 7th in France “.
Meeting new expectations
Building on this success, Montpellier Business School has decided to strengthen its international footprint by developing 9 new programmes that meet market expectations. The latter are collectively identified by the Directorate of MSc programmes, MBS faculty members and partner companies.
“The new MScs are structured around themes on which MBS has a strong reputation, both in terms of research (Responsible Finance, Microcredit, Fintech, Cryptocurrencies, Blockchains, Supply Chain, Big Data, Data Sciences) and pedagogy (Design thinking). They highlight France and Occitanie region’s major economic assets (Food and Wine, Tourism and Hospitality, French Excellence)“, says Dr Denis Lescop. “These MSc programmes will also enrich and promote the cultural diversity of our campus by opening up to a wide range of candidates from different horizons and backgrounds”.

If Martin could be defined in a phrase, it would be a polyglot with a passion for travel. After obtaining a degree at the College of Tourism and Leisure Industry in Austria, his home country, Martin headed for Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom to complete the Bachelor of Arts programme in Hospitality with Events Management. He chose France as his next country of study, aiming to complete his studies and enhance his CV. He opted for MBS’s Master of Sciences in International Business, which enabled him to complete his education and take advantage of a long-term internship before entering the job market.
Martin chose the MSc in International Business first and foremost to acquire new skills in management, marketing and business strategy on an international level, aspects he hadn’t had the chance to explore in previous courses. « Because I’d studied the « pure » tourism sector a lot, I wanted to choose a complementary course, one that corresponded with my career objective, which is to work in international development of a tourist facility. I already speak French and English fluently, but this MSc was an opportunity to perfect both languages, especially with a more technical and professional vocabulary. »
Today, Martin has just begun his second semester of courses and gave us his impression of the curriculum : « For me, the major advantage of this MSc is really the quality of the preparation for entering the international business world. The courses and workshops are designed in such a way as to guarantee fast employment, by giving us all the keys to become competent managers or to start up a business of our own. In the first semester, Professor Paul Martin’s International Business Model Developer course taught us to really think about our career objectives and better orient ourselves. We had several entrepreneurs and company directors coming in to tell us their experiences, which gave us new insight into our potential career choices. This semester, we’ve got major work ahead with the “Entrepreneurial Project” course, which challenges us to create an innovative company with students from two other MBS MSc programmes. »
And in June, it will already be time for the four-to-six-month internship, which Martin also plans to do in France. « I want to stay in France for my internship because France has always been the top world destination, ahead of the United States. So to get work experience here can only be positive. The ideal would be to find it in the marketing department of an international hotel complex. I think that speaking seven languages, five fluently, is an asset that might set me apart from the other candidates in the sector, so I’m pretty optimistic. »
Federica Ongetta, 22, is one of the 17 students in the new Master of Science in Finance offered by Montpellier Business School. Coming straight from Trevis in Italy, where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in international business over four years at the Ca Foscari Venezia University, she chose to continue with an MSc in France, in order to acquire in-depth knowledge of a specialised subject and enjoy a multicultural environment.
“I love the unknown and I love discoveries. Last year, I spent a ski season in Australia as a ski instructor and I loved getting to know another culture and opening up to others – it was very rewarding”, she explains. “So, after my Bachelor’s degree, it was time to finish my academic path abroad. I wanted to finish my studies by becoming an expert in a complex field, such as financial management, as well as by becoming more mature and opening up my mind. That’s why I wanted to pursue an MSc in a foreign country that appealed to me a lot : France !”
It was her finance professor in Australia who guided her choice of school : « When I talked about my plans to my finance professor, Guido Massimiliano Mantovani – who also teaches at Harvard – he was the one who recommended Montpellier Business School, for the quality of its teaching and its highly esteemed teachers. And I thank him for that because I have no regrets! » says Federica. « The courses at Montpellier Business School are very different from those that I could have taken in Italy! Here we do a lot of group work, so a spirit of cohesion develops very quickly between students. The teaching method is very communicative with an action-oriented approach. »
Always looking for diversity and opportunities to develop her language skills, Federica is not disappointed: « Coming to France to pursue specialised training, taught entirely in English – it’s double immersion! Not to mention the multicultural environment of Montpellier Business School. The student body is international, everyone is from a different country, whether it’s China, Mexico, Morocco, Tunisia, the Dominican Republic, or somewhere else. As well as academic sharing, there’s a true sharing of cultures. We also have the opportunity to interact with students of the Master Grande École Programme since we have courses in common, so we are not all separated, which is something I was concerned about at the beginning. »
Soon, Federica will have to find a placement that will be decisive for her future career. And she is eager to be able to complete her CV. « I don’t really have any professional experience related to finance in particular. Therefore, I’m really looking forward to diving into the field with a long-term placement that enables me to prove my skills as a future Financial Risk Manager. So, if you are looking for an intern in this area, please think of me ! »
